Synopsis

The year 1986 saw the British soap opera EastEnders – Season 2 further establish its presence in UK television, building on the initial success of its debut year. This season continued to track the daily lives of residents in Albert Square, a fictional area in London’s East End, as they navigated complex personal and community conflicts. Key storylines focused on significant family struggles, new relationships, and pivotal dramatic events that shaped the series’ early reputation.

Season 2 followed characters as they faced issues ranging from marital breakdown and family secrets to social change. The show continued to present a detailed view of working-class London life, featuring both domestic disputes and broader social commentaries. This period introduced several new faces who would become central to the series’ ongoing narrative.

EastEnders – Season 2 Plot Summary

EastEnders – Season 2 opened in January 1986, immediately immersing viewers in developing family tensions. A central storyline involved Den Watts and Angie Watts, whose tumultuous marriage reached a peak. Angie attempted suicide in February, and later told Den she had a terminal illness in October, a lie intended to prevent him from leaving her for his mistress, Jan Hammond. This deception unraveled, leading to Den serving Angie with divorce papers on Christmas Day 1986, an event that drew record viewership.

Elsewhere in Albert Square, Michelle Fowler, still a teenager, gave birth to her daughter, Vicki Fowler, in May. Michelle then agreed to marry Lofty Holloway, but ultimately jilted him at the altar in September. Arthur Fowler faced legal trouble after robbing the Christmas club money, leading to his arrest in November and a subsequent breakdown. The season also featured the death of nurse Andy O’Brien, who was hit by a lorry in August while saving a child, and introduced Colin Russell, the show’s first openly gay character, alongside his developing relationship with Barry Clark.

EastEnders – Season 2 Cast, Characters, and Arc

The cast of EastEnders – Season 2 featured returning mainstays and introduced characters who would become integral to the series. Anita Dobson played Angie Watts, whose alcoholism and desperate attempts to hold onto her marriage with Den Watts (Leslie Grantham) defined much of her arc this season. Leslie Grantham continued as Den Watts, managing his pub and his affair with Jan Hammond (Jane How), a new character who added pressure to his marital strife.

Gillian Taylforth appeared as Kathy Beale, while Anna Wing portrayed the matriarch Lou Beale. Michelle Fowler, played by Susan Tully, navigated new motherhood with Vicki Fowler (Emma Herry) and a troubled engagement to Lofty Holloway (Tom Watt). Bill Treacher played Arthur Fowler, whose financial desperation led to a major legal issue, and Wendy Richard was Pauline Fowler. Other significant introductions included Pat Wicks (Pam St. Clement), who arrived in June, and Colin Russell (Michael Cashman), who made his debut in August and was involved in a groundbreaking storyline for British television. Nej Adamson played Ali Osman, and Oscar James appeared as Tony Carpenter. Linda Davidson continued her role as Mary Smith, whose parenting struggles were a recurring focus.

How EastEnders – Season 2 Fits the Series

EastEnders – Season 2 was a critical year for the BBC soap opera, which began broadcasting in February 1985. The 1986 storylines solidified the show’s reputation for gritty realism and its willingness to tackle difficult and often controversial topics. The dramatic breakdown of Den and Angie Watts’ marriage, culminating in the iconic Christmas Day divorce papers, became a landmark moment in British television, watched by over 30 million viewers.

The season also introduced several characters who would go on to have long-lasting impacts, such as Pat Wicks/Butcher and Colin Russell. Colin Russell’s storyline, as the first openly gay character in a British soap opera, was a significant development, reflecting the show’s commitment to portraying diverse social realities. These early narratives established the tone and thematic depth that defined EastEnders for decades, centering on the struggles and resilience of working-class families in the fictional Albert Square.
