Synopsis

Supernatural – Season 13 premiered on The CW on October 2017. This season picked up immediately after the chaotic events of the season twelve finale. Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) dealt with the loss of their mother Mary Winchester and their close friend Castiel. The season was characterized by the introduction of a new, powerful being and a journey into an alternate dimension known as the Apocalypse World.

The central conflict of this season was the arrival of Jack (Alexander Calvert), the son of Lucifer. Sam and Dean had very different ideas about how to handle the newborn Nephilim. While Sam wanted to mentor the boy and believed his nature could be guided toward good, Dean saw him as a dangerous monster that needed to be eliminated. This disagreement created a wedge between the brothers as they tried to find a way to rescue their mother from the other side of a dimensional rift.

Why You Should Watch Supernatural – Season 13

Supernatural – Season 13 changed the long-running series by introducing a permanent new member to the core group. Alexander Calvert joined the cast as Jack, bringing a father-son dynamic to the show that had not been seen before. The season also expanded the lore by showing a world where the Winchesters were never born, allowing for the return of fan-favorite characters in new, grittier forms. It balanced standalone monster-of-the-week episodes with a large-scale multiversal conflict.

The Struggle of Nurture vs Nature

The arc involving Jack was the main focus of the season. The writers used this character to test the morality of the Winchester brothers. Sam Winchester took on a protective role, seeing a bit of his own history as a “cursed” child in Jack. Dean Winchester, however, suffered from deep grief and redirected his anger toward the boy. This friction was a primary driver for the first half of the season.

As Jack learned to use his powers, he searched for a sense of purpose. He did not want to be like his father, Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino). Instead, he looked to Sam, Dean, and eventually Castiel as his true family. This journey from a dangerous entity to a member of the hunting team was a major development for the series. It gave the older characters a reason to keep fighting after so many personal losses.

The Apocalypse World and Archangel Michael

The Apocalypse World was a significant setting in this season. It was a bleak, war-torn version of Earth where the archangel Michael (Christian Keyes) had defeated Lucifer but essentially destroyed humanity in the process. Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith) was trapped in this world for much of the season. Her survival depended on her wits and an uneasy alliance with Lucifer, who was also stuck there.

This alternate reality allowed the show to bring back characters like Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver) and Charlie Bradbury (Felicia Day). These versions of the characters did not know the Winchesters, which created interesting social dynamics. The threat from the alternate Michael eventually crossed over into the main world, leading to a massive confrontation that required the brothers to seek help from unexpected sources, including the archangel Gabriel (Richard Speight Jr.).

The Resurrection of Castiel

Fans were relieved when Castiel (Misha Collins) returned early in the season. His death in the previous finale had sent him to The Empty, a void where cosmic beings go when they die. His return was triggered by Jack calling out his name, showing the deep connection between the two. Castiel became a mentor to Jack, helping him understand the burden of having immense power.

Once reunited with the brothers, Castiel helped them track down the Prince of Hell named Asmodeus. Asmodeus served as a secondary antagonist for a portion of the season, attempting to use Jack for his own gains. The season also featured the crossover episode “Scoobynatural,” where the brothers and Castiel were pulled into a cartoon. This episode became one of the most famous entries in the entire series history due to its unique animation and humor.

A Failed Spin-off Attempt

This season also included the episode titled “Wayward Sisters.” This was intended to be a backdoor pilot for a new TV show centered on Sheriff Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes) and her group of young hunters. The episode followed the women as they protected their town from monsters while the Winchesters were missing in another dimension. While The CW did not pick up the series, the characters continued to appear in the main Supernatural timeline.

The finale of the season set the stage for the final years of the show. Dean Winchester had to make a desperate choice to defeat Lucifer once and for all. He agreed to become the vessel for the alternate Michael. While they succeeded in killing Lucifer, Michael betrayed Dean and took full control of his body. The season ended with Michael walking through a city in Dean’s form, leaving the audience with a massive cliffhanger.
