Synopsis

My Hero Academia – Season 1 began its run on April 3, 2016, introducing a world where superpowers, known as Quirks, are common. Approximately 80% of the human population possesses some form of genetic mutation that grants them special abilities. These range from elemental control to physical transformations. Izuku Midoriya, the main character, was born without any such power, making him a rare Quirkless individual in a society that values heroes above all else.

Despite his lack of powers, Midoriya remained obsessed with professional heroes and kept detailed notebooks on their techniques. His life took a sharp turn when he encountered his idol, All Might, the world’s highest-ranking hero. After a series of events involving a villain made of sludge, All Might chose Midoriya to inherit his own power, a transferable Quirk called One For All. The first season follows Midoriya as he attempts to master this overwhelming strength while attending the elite U.A. High School.

The World of Quirks and Hero Society

The setting of My Hero Academia – Season 1 is defined by a rigid social hierarchy based on the utility of one’s Quirk. Those with powerful combat abilities typically find work as Pro Heroes, who are licensed by the government to manage disasters and apprehend criminals. Izuku Midoriya starts the series at the bottom of this hierarchy, facing frequent harassment from his childhood peer Katsuki Bakugo. Bakugo possesses a powerful Explosion Quirk and views Midoriya as an obstacle to his goal of becoming the top hero.

The shift in Midoriya‘s status begins with a ten-month physical training program on Dagobah Municipal Beach Park. All Might tasking Midoriya with cleaning the trash-filled beach served as a method to strengthen his body enough to hold the One For All power. Without this physical preparation, the raw energy of the Quirk would have caused Midoriya‘s body to fail. This preparation led directly into the U.A. High School entrance exams, where Midoriya had to demonstrate his worth against mechanical robots.

The U.A. High School Curriculum

Once admitted to U.A. High, Midoriya joined Class 1-A under the supervision of Shota Aizawa, also known as Eraser Head. Aizawa‘s teaching style is based on logic and the threat of expulsion. In the first few days, students underwent a Quirk Apprehension Test. This test forced students to use their powers in standard physical education drills like the long jump and ball toss. This allowed Midoriya to realize that he could not yet control One For All without breaking his own bones.

The curriculum also included combat training. One of the first major exercises paired Midoriya with Ochaco Uraraka, a student with a Zero Gravity Quirk, against Bakugo and Tenya Iida. Iida possesses Engine Quirks in his calves, giving him immense speed. This training session served as a turning point for Midoriya and Bakugo‘s relationship. It was the first time Midoriya used his tactical knowledge to stand his ground against Bakugo‘s aggressive combat style.

The Rise of the League of Villains

The final arc of the season moved the students to the Unforeseen Simulation Joint (USJ), a massive facility designed to train students for various disaster scenarios. The facility is divided into zones like fire, flood, and landslide. During a scheduled training session, a group known as the League of Villains breached the school’s security systems and warped into the facility. This group was led by Tomura Shigaraki and a mist-like villain named Kurogiri.

The goal of the League of Villains was to draw out All Might and eliminate him. They brought a genetically engineered creature called Nomu, which was designed specifically to absorb All Might‘s heavy-hitting physical attacks. The students were scattered across the different disaster zones and had to fight for their lives against lower-level thugs. This event forced the freshmen to use their abilities in a real combat situation for the first time, ending with a large-scale confrontation between All Might and the Nomu.

Why You Should Watch My Hero Academia – Season 1

This season establishes the foundational rules of a complex superhero world. It avoids many traditional tropes by showing the physical and legal consequences of using powers in public. The focus on Midoriya’s strategic mind provides a different perspective on combat than many other TV Shows in the same genre. The animation by studio Bones is consistent, particularly during the climax at the USJ, and the character designs are distinct and functional.

The series is useful for viewers who prefer detailed world-building and clear power systems. Each character in Class 1-A has a specific limitation to their power, which prevents them from becoming invincible. For example, Denki Kaminari can discharge electricity but shorts out his own brain if he uses too much. This creates a tactical environment where the characters must work together to overcome stronger opponents. You can find more details about the series on IMDb or the main My Hero Academia page.
