Synopsis

Attack on Titan – Season 2 picks up immediately after the destructive battle in the Stohess District. The Survey Corps manages to capture the Female Titan, but the discovery of a Titan encased within the stone of the walls sends shockwaves through the military and religious hierarchy. Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert have no time to process this revelation before reports arrive that Wall Rose has been breached by a new horde of monsters.

The season moves away from the internal city politics to focus on the 104th Training Corps members stationed at the front lines. Without their Omni-Directional Mobility Gear, these soldiers are forced to investigate the breach while protecting civilian villages. The narrative introduces the Beast Titan, a massive, fur-covered entity that displays unsettling intelligence and the ability to speak. This season transitions the series from a struggle for survival into a complex mystery involving betrayal and the true origin of the Titans.

Attack on Titan – Season 2 Plot Summary

The plot begins with the sudden appearance of Titans within Wall Rose, the middle defensive line of humanity. This event is particularly terrifying because there are no visible holes or damage to the wall itself. Survey Corps members like Sasha Blouse and Connie Springer are dispatched to warn their home villages, leading to grim discoveries about the fate of their families. Connie finds a Titan immobilized on his family home, which strangely resembles his mother, introducing the theory that Titans are transformed humans.

As night falls, a group of scouts takes refuge in the ruins of Utgard Castle. They are soon besieged by Titans that remain active despite the lack of sunlight, a feat previously thought impossible. The Beast Titan watches from a distance, using boulders to crush the scouts’ horses and trap them on the tower. This leads to the reveal of Ymir as a Titan Shifter, as she transforms to protect Krista Lenz and the remaining survivors from the relentless assault.

The climax of the season occurs atop Wall Rose during a moment of supposed rest. Reiner Braun and Bertholdt Hoover reveal themselves as the Armored Titan and Colossal Titan, the enemies responsible for the fall of Wall Maria. This betrayal leads to a brutal confrontation between Eren and Reiner. The season concludes with a desperate rescue mission led by Commander Erwin Smith to retrieve Eren after he is kidnapped by the traitors. During the battle, Eren unknowingly activates the Coordinate power, allowing him to control mindless Titans through his will.

Attack on Titan – Season 2 Cast, Characters, and Arc

The cast for this season expands the depth of the 104th Training Corps, moving the focus away from the main trio. Yuki Kaji provides the voice for Eren Jaeger, whose arc shifts from pure rage to a deep sense of betrayal as he realizes his mentors are his enemies. Yui Ishikawa returns as Mikasa Ackerman, whose primary motivation remains the protection of Eren at any cost, even when the odds are overwhelming.

The character development in this arc is most significant for several key figures:

  • Reiner Braun (Yoshimasa Hosoya): The season explores his fractured psyche and the mental toll of living a double life as a soldier and a mass murderer.
  • Bertholdt Hoover (Tomohisa Hashizume): Often quiet, his character shows the immense guilt and pressure of his mission to destroy humanity.
  • Ymir (Saki Fujita): Her mysterious past and her devotion to Krista are central to the season’s emotional core.
  • Krista Lenz (Shiori Mikami): Her true identity is teased as being vital to the secrets of the walls and the Order of the Walls.

The Survey Corps leadership also plays a vital role. Commander Erwin Smith (Daisuke Ono) demonstrates his willingness to sacrifice everything, including his own limb, to ensure the survival of the human race. Hange Zoë (Romi Park) leads the scientific investigation into the Titan found inside the wall, providing the first clues about the biological nature of their enemies.

How Attack on Titan – Season 2 Fits the Series

This season serves as the bridge between the visceral survival horror of the first season and the geopolitical drama of the later installments. It shifts the stakes from defending a city to uncovering a global conspiracy. By revealing the identities of the Armored and Colossal Titans, the series removes the anonymity of the monsters and gives the conflict a human face. This makes the war much more personal for the survivors of the Shiganshina massacre.

The introduction of the Coordinate power is the most important plot development for the series’ future. It establishes Eren not just as a powerful weapon, but as the literal key to humanity’s salvation or destruction. The season also reinforces the theme that the walls are not a permanent solution, but a ticking clock. The presence of Titans inside the stone suggests that the very foundation of human safety is built on the remains of their enemies.

Key Themes Explored:

  • The Illusion of Safety: The breach of Wall Rose proves that physical barriers are insufficient against an evolving enemy.
  • Dual Identities: Many characters are forced to choose between their loyalty to their friends and their duty to a mysterious “hometown.”
  • Human Evolution: The Beast Titan represents a leap in Titan intelligence, suggesting that the enemies of humanity are far more advanced than previously believed.
