Synopsis

Attack on Titan – Season 3 was released on July 23, 2018, marking a significant shift in the focus of the series. While previous seasons primarily showed the battle between the Survey Corps and the Titans outside the walls, this installment moved into political territory. The story followed Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert as they encountered corruption within the government of the walls.

The season was split into two distinct parts, covering the Uprising and the Return to Shiganshina. The first half showed the Levi Squad as they were forced to go into hiding from the Interior Military Police. The second half depicted the long-awaited mission to reclaim the wall and reach the basement of Eren’s childhood home. This season provided many of the answers that viewers had been seeking since the start of the Attack on Titan series.

Why You Should Watch Attack on Titan – Season 3

This season provided a balance between character-driven political drama and some of the most technical action sequences in the show. The introduction of human-on-human combat changed the pace of the series. It also humanized the characters as they had to make difficult moral choices while fighting their own kind.

The Political Uprising and the Reiss Family

The first part of the season dealt with the internal corruption of the government. The Survey Corps were declared outlaws by the crown, forcing Commander Erwin Smith to orchestrate a coup. This section of the story showed that the Titans were not the only threat to humanity’s survival.

A major focus was placed on Historia Reiss and her biological father, Rod Reiss. The plot showed that Historia was the rightful heir to the throne, and the current King was a false puppet. This shifted the goal of the Survey Corps from exploration to political revolution.

The backstory of the Founding Titan was also revealed during this period. The series showed how the power was passed down through the Reiss bloodline. It explained why the memories of the people within the walls had been altered for generations.

The Rivalry Between Levi and Kenny

The addition of Kenny the Ripper added a new personal challenge for Captain Levi Ackerman. Kenny was a figure from Levi’s past who taught him how to survive in the Underground City. Their battle sequences showed a different use of the Omni-Directional Mobility (ODM) gear.

Instead of blades, Kenny’s squad used firearms specifically designed to kill humans. This forced the Survey Corps to adapt their combat tactics. The confrontation between Levi and Kenny gave more depth to Levi’s character and his family history.

The series explained the origins of the Ackerman family and their role as protectors of the crown. It also showed Kenny’s personal motivations for seeking the power of the Titans. This conflict ended with a clearer understanding of Levi’s motivations as a leader.

The Return to Shiganshina Mission

The second half of the season featured the high-stakes battle to retake Wall Maria. The Survey Corps faced the Beast Titan, the Armored Titan, and the Colossal Titan in a massive confrontation. This mission was the culmination of years of preparation and planning.

The battle showed the use of Thunder Spears, a new weapon designed to pierce the hardened skin of Titans. Armin Arlert played a key role as a strategist, making tactical decisions that determined the outcome of the fight. The cost of the mission was high, with the Survey Corps losing the majority of its members.

One of the most significant moments was the final charge led by Erwin Smith. This act of distraction allowed Levi to reach the Beast Titan, though the consequences for the regiment were permanent. The battle forced the characters to decide who would receive the Titan injection to survive.

The Secrets of the Basement

After the battle concluded, Eren and the survivors finally reached the basement in Shiganshina. They found the journals left behind by Grisha Jaeger. These books contained the true history of the world and the origins of the Titans.

The reveal showed that the people within the walls were not the last of humanity. Instead, they lived on an island called Paradis. Outside the walls, a technologically advanced nation called Marley existed. This discovery changed the entire context of the war.

The season ended with the characters seeing the ocean for the first time. While it was a moment of peace, it also established that their true enemies were across the sea. The shift in perspective prepared the audience for the final arcs of the show.
