Synopsis

The second season of the supernatural anime followed Nanami Momozono, a high school student who functioned as the local Land God of the Mikage Shrine. After her initial adjustment to the spirit world, she became more confident in her divine duties and her interactions with supernatural beings. She continued to live with her fox familiar, Tomoe, and her snake familiar, Mizuki, while maintaining the shrine’s reputation among the local spirits and human residents.

The season primarily focused on two major story arcs that tested Nanami’s skills and her relationships. The first arc followed her journey to the Divine Assembly in Izumo, a gathering of gods where she had to prove her worth. The second and longer arc took the characters to Mount Kurama, the ancestral home of the crow tengu. There, Nanami encountered internal conflicts within the tengu community and worked to save their leader from a mysterious illness while managing her complicated feelings for Tomoe.

Why You Should Watch Kamisama Kiss – Season 2

This season provided a significant expansion of the world established in the first part of the series. It moved the story away from the Mikage Shrine and explored new locations like the Underworld and the hidden village of the tengu. The narrative shifted between lighthearted comedy and more serious drama, providing a deeper look into the history of the main characters and the mechanics of the spirit world.

The Growth of Nanami Momozono

One of the most notable aspects of the second season was the development of Nanami Momozono. She was no longer just a girl who happened to have a mark on her forehead; she actively practiced her talisman magic. In Izumo, she faced trials that required her to use her wit and her white monkey familiar, Mamoru, to succeed. This arc showed that she was capable of standing among the higher gods of Japan.

Her role in the Mount Kurama arc further cemented her growth. She did not wait for Tomoe to solve every problem for her. Instead, she entered a dangerous and restricted territory to help Kurama and the younger tengu, Botanmaru. Her willingness to put herself at risk for others remained her defining trait, but she paired it with a better understanding of her divine abilities.

The Mount Kurama and Tengu Conflict

The Mount Kurama arc took up a large portion of the season and introduced several new characters. Daisuke Kishio voiced Kurama, the pop idol who returned to his home to find it in turmoil. The mountain was ruled by Jiro, a cold and powerful tengu who had taken over after the Sojobo, the grand leader, fell into a deep sleep. The tension between Kurama and his brother Jiro formed the central conflict of these episodes.

  • Jiro acted as a stern leader who prioritized strength and discipline above all else.
  • Nanami managed to break through Jiro‘s defenses, leading to a shift in the mountain’s power structure.
  • The arc provided a detailed look at tengu culture, including their flight abilities and the hierarchy of the mountain.
  • Tomoe remained protective of Nanami throughout the arc, showing his loyalty despite his grumpy demeanor.

Tomoe’s Past and Akura-ou

The season also hinted at the darker past of Tomoe. Viewers learned more about his time as a wild fox demon and his partnership with the demon king Akura-ou. A new character named Kirihito was introduced, who was actually the soul of Akura-ou inhabiting a human body. He sought to regain his original form and frequently crossed paths with Nanami in the Underworld.

These segments added a layer of mystery to the show. The contrast between the modern, domestic Tomoe and the violent demon from the past created a source of internal conflict for the character. While the romance between Nanami and Tomoe progressed slowly, the exploration of his history suggested that their bond was more complex than a simple contract between a god and a familiar.

Production and Visual Presentation

The animation was handled by TMS Entertainment, maintaining the bright and expressive style of the previous season. Director Akitaro Daichi utilized a color palette that emphasized the supernatural nature of the settings, especially during the Izumo and Underworld sequences. The character designs by Junko Yamanaka stayed true to the original manga source material, ensuring consistency for long-time followers.

The voice cast returned to deliver consistent performances. Suzuko Mimori provided a grounded and relatable voice for Nanami, while the supporting cast, including Daisuke Namikawa and Yui Horie, brought variety to the diverse group of spirits and gods. The soundtrack, composed by Toshio Masuda, used traditional Japanese instruments like the shamisen and flute to enhance the mythological atmosphere of the show.
